Katherine (“Kat”) Passley
Kat, a native of North Miami, joined Beyond the Bars as a member in 2020 after her father’s incarceration. She took up a leadership role within the organization, drafting agendas and leading meetings, engaging in policy advocacy work, and preparing other members for delegation meetings with elected officials. She became a staff member of BTB in 2021, sharing her intimate knowledge of the prosecutor’s office and police departments to benefit BTB members with open criminal cases. She also brought with her extensive experience with restorative and transformative justice, having been trained in faith-based transformative mediation practices to restore relationships at home, work and church. Now as the Co-Executive Director of BTB, Kat develops and leads organizing trainings for BTB’s members, coaches systems-impacted people to hone their organizing skills, and develops programs to support healing from trauma.
Kat’s work with BTB has been recognized with awards from Florida Memorial University (FMU), Legacy South Florida’s Prominent and Influential Black Women in Business and Industry, and Florida International University. She has also been awarded fellowships by Howard University and Miami-Dade County's National Endowment for the Arts. She has led national organizing trainings with Leading Change Network (LCN) and Formerly Incarcerated People and Families Movement (FICPFM). She holds an M.S. from Florida International University (FIU) and a B.A. from FMU.
